1. What does TMS stand for?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.


2. How long does TMS take?

Each individual mental health condition requires a different amount of treatments and time. Please reach out to us to discuss your particular needs. 


3. Does TMS hurt?

No. Some patients report some discomfort in the beginning while they get used to the treatments but often adjust quickly.


4. Are there any side effects to TMS?

Some patients report slight headaches the first few treatments however those quickly resolve. There are no other side effects reported.


5. How effective is TMS Therapy?

Approximately 58% of patients with treatment resistant depression respond positively to TMS treatment. 


6. Which TMS machine do you use?

We use the Magstim. 


7. What does TMS Therapy do?

As the patient sits in our comfortable chair, the TMS machine delivers short pulses of magnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. We create an individualized map on a person's head to ensure that we reach the areas of the brain responsible for emotional judgement and mood relationship. There is no radiation and no pain. The pulses, using magnetic technology, generate an electric current in the brain that causes neurons to fire and strengthen communication amongst neurons. 


8. Is TMS FDA Authorized? 

Yes, the FDA cleared Magstim TMS THerapy for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder. TMS has also been recommended by the American Psychiatric Association since 2010.


9. Is TMS covered by my insurance?

TMS is covered by most insurances with prior authorization required. Insurances will often require a person to have attempted psychiatric medications and therapy before covering treatments. 


10. How long will it take for me to see an improvement?

TMS varies for individuals. Many patients report feeling an improvement by week three, others require the full six weeks before seeing some significant changes.
